Italian Pasta with Chicken

If you want a tasty, satisfying, and fast dinner on a weeknight, you've come to the right spot! Seasoned tender chicken, marinara sauce, and grated Parmesan cheese on a bed of pasta. It's simple and delicious!


My family is lovers of all things pasta, and if you add cooked chicken, we like it even more! Anything from a creamy chicken pasta made from heavy cream to a delicious tomato sauce and everything in between. Chicken Parmesan, however, is high on the list and we are are intrigued by any variation of it's delicious taste! This dish captures all the wonderful flavors of the classic, minus the breaded chicken, yet it is both tasty and simple to prepare!


This recipe has been in my possession for such a long time that I can't recall how I obtained it! Although it's not a dish we make often in our household, it definitely deserves to be on the regular menu rotation because it's full of delicious flavors! During my days as a busy working mom, having quick and easy recipes with simple ingredients that I typically had in my pantry was always a great find. This recipe is a perfect example of that! The original recipe is called Speedy Italian Pasta with Chicken, which fits perfectly with how I enjoyed cooking those days. Bonus, this great recipe tastes really good too!


What You Need

  • Butter

  • Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast, chopped

  • Onion, chopped

  • Fresh Garlic or Minced Garlic

  • Marinara Sauce

  • Italian Seasoning

  • Parmesan Cheese

  • Spaghetti or other pasta

  • Salt

  • Black Pepper


Tips for Making Italian Pasta with Chicken

  • Any good quality kind of pasta may be used including penne pasta or fettuccine noodles

  • Not a fan of parmesan cheese, substitute with mozzarella cheese 

  • You may use skinless boneless chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts

  • You may substitute olive oil for the butter to cook the chicken

  • Add bell peppers to get your veggies

  • Top with fresh basil, if desired

How to Make Italian Pasta with Chicken

Easy clean up with this recipe because it all cooks in one skillet, plus boiling the pasta in a separate pot.


Step 1: Melt butter in a large skillet and add chicken, onion and garlic and cook until chicken is golden brown has an internal temperature of 165°F.  Stir marinara sauce and Italian seasoning in with the juicy chicken breasts and reduce to medium-low to medium heat. The sauce should be simmering, not boiling. Cover the pan and allow to simmer for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add salt and pepper to taste.

1)Chicken cooked in butter with marinara sauce added and 2) the chicken mixture ready for parmesan cheese to be added.


Step 2: While the chicken mixture is simmering, cook pasta in a large pot according to package directions.  


Step 3: Add the Parmesan cheese to the chicken mixture, remove from heat, cover the pan and allow the cheese to melt as you plate the cooked pasta. Top the pasta with the chicken marinara mixture and enjoy!

How to Store Italian Pasta with Chicken 

This delicious chicken recipe may be stored in an airtight container or on a dish wrapped with plastic wrap for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. This pasta dish heats up well in the microwave the next day!
