Easy Cake Balls Recipe

Kim

Easy to make Cake Balls using any flavor boxed cake mix and frosting to make this delicious treat! Whether for a special occasion or simply as a sweet treat for yourself, they are sure to be a hit with their portable size and delicious taste, they make a perfect addition to any dessert table, holiday goodie plate or gift basket.

This is a recipe that has been on my list to share for a while, but I typically only make Cake Balls during the holidays and we all know how busy that time of year is! I got an early start this year and made a batch so I could share with you so you too can make these for your holiday goodie trays, for birthday parties, or any occasion where cake is involved (which should be all occasions, says the woman who lives for cake!).

Creating Cake Balls with a candy coating is a fun and simple process and I love making them with my daughters! Plan ahead as they do take a bit of time to roll, dip, but by starting with a basic boxed cake mix of your choice, you have the flexibility to experiment with various flavors and combinations. Whether you prefer classic chocolate, like me, or indulgent red velvet -- the cake possibilities are endless. You can opt for traditional buttercream frosting, cream cheese frosting, or even flavored frostings to elevate the taste.

Ingredients listed are for the chocolate cake and chocolate frosting Cake Balls shown in the photos.

What You Need

The main ingredients needed to make Easy Cake Balls!

  • Chocolate Cake Mix

  • Eggs

  • Vegetable Oil

  • Water or Whole Milk

  • Chocolate Frosting

  • Chocolate Almond Bark

  • Candy Melts - Red, Green or any color

  • Sanding Sugar Sprinkles

Tips for Making Easy Cake Balls

  • Get creative and try a red velvet cake or any flavor of cake including dark chocolate!

  • Add mini chocolate chips to the cake before baking or mix them in with the frosting and cake crumbles!

  • Adding whole milk instead of water to the cake mix adds fat, which results in better flavor and density. If you want an even richer cake, try buttermilk instead of whole milk

  • If you want a thicker and denser cake, add an extra egg to your mix!

  • Butter may be used in place of vegetable oil, giving your a more flavorful cake with better texture. Replace the oil with an equal amount of melted butter!

  • If you're looking for the candy melts, you can find them in the baking aisle at your local grocery store or craft store.

How to Make Easy Cake Balls

A box of cake mix and frosting turns into a delicious treat everyone will enjoy!

Step 1:  Bake the box cake mix according to package directions. I substitute whole milk for water when baking a boxed cake because it makes the cake richer and more like a homemade cake! Let the cake cool completely.

1)Boxed cake mix ready to mix and 2) cake batter ready to bake.

Step 2: Prepare a cookie sheet with parchment paper or wax paper and set aside. Once the cake is cool, crumble it into fine crumbs and transfer to a large bowl. Add the add store-bought frosting to the cake crumbles and mix until the cake and frosting are well combined.  Using a small scoop (cookie scoop) roll into a ball. The medium or large scoops work as well, depending on how large you want your Cake Balls ... make them the perfect size for you! Place each cake ball on the cookie sheet. Once all batter is formed into Cake Balls, place in the freezer until they are solid. NOTE: If you try to dunk/dip room temperature cake balls into the almond bark, they will fall apart!

1) Baked cake ready to crumble and 2) crumbled cake with frosting added ready to combine.

Step 3: Melt almond bark in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring after each cook time, until the almond bark is smooth. Using a fork, dip each Cake Ball into the the melted almond bark or spoon the melted chocolate over the top and side of the Cake Ball. Tap the fork on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate and put back on the cookie sheet or onto a separate parchment-lined baking sheet.

1) Cake balls ready to dip and 2) dipped cake ball

Step 4: While the almond bark is still wet, add sanding sugar sprinkles or crushed nuts to add a decorative touch! Another option is to wait until the almond bark has set up on the Cake Balls, then add colored candy melts.

How to Store Easy Cake Balls

Store these delicious cake bites in an airtight container or on a decorative plate covered with plastic wrap at room temperature for a short period of time. I recommend keeping the Cake Balls in the refrigerator or freezer to keep them fresher longer.

Try making Cake Balls using leftover cake and adding a little frosting and also with Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes and vanilla frosting! Same process without baking a cake and so good!
