If you’re looking for an easy appetizer that’s perfect for game day, Cinco de Mayo, or your next party, this Mexican Layer Dip is always a hit! It’s creamy, colorful, and packed with flavor from every delicious layer. This layered taco dip recipe checks all the boxes for the best party appetizers.

I’ve been enjoying this Mexican Layer Dip since the early 1990s. A friend I worked with brought this delicious dip to an office potluck, and the whole team was hooked! It quickly became one of those recipes everyone wanted to copy down and take home. Ever since then, this party dip has been a family favorite because it is so good, super easy to make, and always a hit at parties, game day gatherings, and tailgates.

I take this Mexican dip to our tailgate in the stadium parking lot, so I like to keep it in a container with a lid. That way, if it’s a warm day, it can easily go back in the cooler and stay fresh. If you’re serving it at home for a party, game day, or the holidays, set it on a large serving platter or casserole dish so everyone can see the colorful layers, and watch it disappear!

What You Need:

  • Refried beans

  • Sour Cream

  • Taco Seasoning Mix

  • Shredded Mexican Blend Cheese

  • Toppings: Black Olives, Jalapeño peppers, fresh Roma tomatoes, fresh cilantro and shredded lettuce for garnishing on this tasty layer

Tips for Making Mexican Layer Dip

  • This recipe is so quick, you can make it minutes before your guests arrive and it will be perfect!

  • It can also be made an hour or so ahead of time and covered with plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.

  • If you need to make it the day before, only prepare the refried beans and sour cream mixture, then cover and store in the refrigerator. Add the toppings just before serving.

How to Make Mexican Layer Dip

Step 1: In a small bowl stir together 16 ounces sour cream with 1 packet of taco seasoning and mix well. If you're not making the dip immediately, return the sour cream mixture to the refrigerator.

Step 2: For the first layer, spread can of refried beans to your desired dish in an even layer. Add the sour cream and taco seasoning mixture to the top of the beans and spread evenly.

Top Left: Refried Beans spread evenly. Top Right: Adding the sour cream mixture.

Step 3: On top of the sour cream layer, add your garnish of choice such as shredded Mexican cheese, shredded lettuce, sliced black olives, sliced jalapeño peppers, diced fresh tomatoes or chopped green onions. Keep in the refrigerator until ready to serve with tortilla chips or corn chips!
