Ham, Pasta & Cottage Cheese Casserole Recipe

This is an easy dinner loaded with ham, egg noodles, cottage cheese, parmesan, and bread crumbs! An easy main dish that is comfort food at its best!

Ham, Noodle & Cottage Cheese Casserole ready to eat!

When I started working on this recipe, my mom had it titled "Sis's Goop" on the recipe card which means she got the recipe from my sister! I don't remember much about this delicious meal, so I gave my sister a call to talk about it. Funny enough, my "Sis" had no recollection of the recipe nor giving it to my mom! Regardless, it is a really delicious recipe that is easy to make and comes together very quickly.

Are you second guessing the cottage cheese in this casserole? If so, let me assure you that it creates an amazing creamy sauce that the egg noodles soak up and tastes so good with the ham.

What You Need

Some of the ingredients (diced green pepper, onion, celery plus ham and egg noodles)

  • Celery, Onion, Green Bell Pepper, diced

  • Flour

  • Salt & Black Pepper

  • Milk

  • Cottage Cheese

  • Ham

  • Egg Noodles

    • Parmesan or Swiss Cheese

    • Butter

    • Bread Crumbs

Tips for Making Ham, Pasta & Cottage Cheese Casserole

  • Noodles: For best results, I recommend using wide egg noddles for this recipe. You could also try elbow macaroni or rotini type of pasta.

  • Ham: I use ham steak for this great recipe and it worked really well. You could also use deli ham sliced a thicker than normal for this recipe. This is also a great way to use up any leftover ham you may have on hand after a holiday. Avoid using flavor infused hams like honey hams, etc. as it may impact the flavor of the casserole.

  • Cheese: The recipe I have did not call for cheese, but I added freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Swiss cheese would also work well in this recipe.

  • Milk: Use milk, heavy cream or half-and-half or any combination based on what you have on hand. If you're feeling like a bit of tanginess is needed, substitute some of the milk with sour cream!

You can have this recipe in the oven in less than 30 minutes and on the table in about an hour! Side it with a garden salad and you have a delicious meal!

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F. Dice up the celery, onion, and green bell pepper and set aside. In a large pot of salted water, cook noodles according to package directions. While the noodles are cooking, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the microwave. Once melted, add 1/2 cup of bread crumbs and set aside.

Step 2: In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt and black pepper and mix. Add the milk and cottage cheese to the flour mixture and mix well to combine.

Step 3: In a large skillet, melt butter (1 teaspoon) or use nonstick cooking spray and saute the diced celery, onion and green bell pepper on medium heat until tender. Add the creamy sauce to the cooked vegetables and continue to cook on medium-high heat until it boils, stirring often, and cook for 3-5 minutes or until the mixture is thick and creamy. Remove from heat and add the ham, cooked pasta and Parmesan cheese and mix well.

Step 4: Spoon noodle mixture in to a medium casserole dish and top with the melted butter/bread crumb mixture. Bake for 30-40 minutes until it is bubbling around the edges and the bread crumbs are golden brown.
