These chewy Chocolate Malt Bars are rich and delicious and easy to make! The amazing malt flavor makes this milkshake chocolate bar so special!
I found this recipe in my Mom's collection! I have shared before that my Mom worked at an elementary school and the ladies loved a good bar cookie, anything from your standard chocolate chip cookie bars to delicious coconut filled bars! For my mom, if it included chocolate it was definitely going in her recipe collection! If you love malted milk balls or a classic chocolate milkshake, this recipe is for you!
I'm guessing this recipe has been in my mom's collection for at least 40 years, probably more. Because this is an old recipe, I had to slightly adjust it as it called for a package of frosting MIX. I'm old enough to remember frosting mixes, but they are very difficult to find. I searched every local store (and could only find vanilla frosting) and searched online but they were a bit expensive and inconvenient. So, I opted to put in a can of smooth milk chocolate frosting instead and trust me, it works out just fine and the bars are very moist and delicious.
What You Need:

If you're a first time user of malted milk powder and don't know where to find it, the baking aisle at your local grocery store is the first place to look. I purchased the Carnation brand malted powder.

Add in chopped nuts (3/4 cup) for another great addition
How To Make Chocolate Malt Bars
A few easy steps bring these delicious bars together quickly!
Step 1: Heat oven to 350 degrees F and prepare a 9x13 inch pan with non stick cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients (combine flour, with sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt) plus the butter and 1 egg. Blend at low speed with an electric mixer until crumbly. Reserve 1 cup of the crumb mixture and press the remaining mixture into the prepared pan.
In the above photos, I added a little too much butter to the mixture. It will be more crumbly when following the recipe exactly.
Step 2: In a separate medium bowl, combine the frosting, malt powder, cream cheese, milk and 1 egg and beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Add the milk balls and chocolate chips, if desired, and mix well.
Step 3: Pour the chocolate mixture over the crumb crust.
Step 4: Sprinkle the top of the with the reserved crumb mixture. Bake at 350°F for 40-45 minutes or until golden. Chill and cut into bars.
How to Store Chocolate Malt Bars
Store the bars in an air tight container at room temperature for 3 days. The bars may be frozen by wrapping in plastic wrap and then placed in a freezer bag for up to one month. Don't forget to date your freezer bag!
